CURATORS

Tautvydas Urbelis, Rasa Chmieliauskaitė, Jonas Oškinis

A special map for wooden architecture in the centre of Kaunas will be presented at the third event of the cycle “Wooden Houses [UN]necessary in the Centre”. The event will include an overview of the stages that have already taken place – a workshop organized by Architecture of Shame (Italy) and Kaunas exposition at the Birthday of Shame festival in Matera. Later, participants will be invited to an evening tour, which will reveal the past, the present and the possible future of wooden architecture.

As the contours of the new Kaunas identity become evident, clearly visible on the façades of the rapidly rising office buildings and in the architectural memory of interwar modernism, it produces a nagging question whether something is not forgotten in this important process.

The Kaunas Architecture Festival, together with the Architecture of Shame initiative born in Matera, Italy, began searching for answer to this question. The result of international cooperation is a series of events “Wooden Houses [UN]necessary in the Centre”, which explores wooden architecture in the central part of Kaunas town. During a workshop organized by Architecture of Shame in the first part of the cycle, participants explored the problematic relationship between wooden architecture and the feeling of shame. The second event of the cycle moved to the Birthday of Shame festival in Matera, where KAFe 2019 presented the exhibition “Wooden Houses [UN]necessary in the Centre”. The third part of the cycle returns to Kaunas and invites you to get acquainted with the results of your work. The event will feature a special map of the wooden buildings, a discussion and an evening tour to highlight the past, the present and the possible future of the wooden houses.
