Heritage as Conflict: methodological prerequisites for evaluation of architectural heritage of Lithuania of the 20thCentury
Author of the book – architecture researcher Assoc. Prof. Vaidas Petrulis

Despite the fundamental purpose of the architectural heritage, which is to foster the identity of the area, public debates about the meaning and significance of historical artefacts in the modern world often unfold as a field of social tension. Through the example of architectural heritage of the 10thcentury, the monograph seeks to discuss the root causes of this phenomenon by defining the social, cultural, and economic origins of conflicts in the field of heritage conservation. In order to overcome these dissonances, the book proposes to abandon the confrontation between the old and the new, ideologically acceptable and not, as well as to view the historical environment as living, ever-changing urban fabric. The text states that value lies not only in the physical form of the artefact, but also in active nurturing of the character of the location, and the transfer of cultural references into today’s context. The book seeks to challenge the concept of heritage as a non-renewable resource and states that the most important premise of value is not a physical artefact, but a culturally meaningful evolutionary process.
